An Significant Milestone when Liam Rosenior Overcomes Boundaries

"Liam Rosenior is a top coach who understands football inside out, and that's the most important thing.

"But, as the Blues' pioneering African heritage footballer, I would be lying to claim this news doesn't move me."

Those are the sentiments of the former Chelsea winger, the man who earned his historic debut for the Blues' first team as a substitute in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea named Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, aged 41, as their new manager after the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of the multi-club ownership group that also controls Chelsea.

There have been just 12 of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – excluding those in interim roles – in the Premier League since it began 34 years ago.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is he grew up and developed his game not far from here, he understands this area," added Canoville.

"When kids observe a figure like Rosenior managing the team they support, someone who looks like them, from a similar background, from a household that champions what's right… it is powerful demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"So yes, this represents a huge step for Chelsea, for the capital, for every young person with big dreams.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, provide him with the necessary tools, and let the man get on with the job."

What Exactly Do the Statistics Indicate?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' manager in 1996 and became the top flight's inaugural black manager.

A dozen years on, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the pioneering black English boss in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other current top flight gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of managers of colour across the English game is matched by a lack of diversity at executive level.

As per a Black Footballers Partnership 2023 report, 43% of Premier League footballers are from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

However, research by Kick It Out found just 3.2 percent of executive and leadership management teams across 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

At senior coaching level, based on figures provided by eleven clubs, the percentage is 2%.

For all coaching positions – including head coaches – from those same 11 clubs, the figure is 5%.

"He's certainly broken barriers by virtue of him being announced as Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we hope to witness more such appointments," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of ability present in the ethnic minority groups... aspiring coaches want the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities. It is imperative to continue to work hard to dismantle those obstacles once and for all."

Furthermore, Rosenior is set to become the fourth full-time British head coaches presently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which lags behind the continent's other big five divisions regarding homegrown representation.

16 of the 20 first division managers in Italy are Italian, 11 of the 20 in Spain, Twelve in the Bundesliga in Germany and Ten in Ligue 1 are French.

Current Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt every aspiring British managers from an academy background are, in some way regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It is truly inspirational to up-and-coming British coaches in the system to witness an individual get such a role with that profile and we hope he does really well."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is based on talent'

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., played for the likes of Fulham, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint culminating in a brief stint in charge of the third-tier club Brentford FC in 2006.

Two years ago, he was awarded an MBE in the Honours List for his services to tackling inequality within the sport and beyond.

After Liam hung up his boots he pursued a path in management. He started writing a column for The Guardian, and in one piece he acknowledged the lack of diversity of black coaches. He pointed out that ethnicity does not determine ability arguing that opportunities should be given on merit.

He also made the view he would repeat: how significant lack of diversity leads to misunderstandings of players with diverse cultural and ethnic heritage.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, he explained how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "hard to manage" or "emotional", but said he could relate to the Dutch player with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from Strasbourg to Chelsea this summer.

In further Guardian columns, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" upon hearing an unnamed coach utter a homophobic slur. He pledged support for the Rainbow Laces initiative and authored an open letter to the former US President during his first US presidency, condemning his "overt" prejudice.

Rosenior has since built his reputation in the dugout – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their collaboration at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells to his former club earlier this week before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract at Chelsea.

Chelsea had the Premier League's first black boss in Gullit as well as the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
