British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
