Each time a prominent prize-giving event approaches, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
